Sold Out 11th Annual Ever Widening Circle Features the Legendary Janis Ian

WID and 350 of our closest friends, allies and sponsors celebrated disability culture at the 11th Annual Ever Widening Circle, held October 30, 2009. With the always entertaining Don Sanchez of KGO-TV serving as MC, the evening opened with writer and performer Greg Walloch gently and humorously guiding the audience through the full-circle journey from chocolate cake to cultural and attitudinal morays, and back to chocolate cake. Walloch's delicious performance was followed by the presentation of WID’s 2009 National Disability Leader’s Award to Marcie Roth for her on-going 40 year commitment to equality and protection of civil rights for people with disabilities, and once again, the audience was treated to a variety of exquisite desserts, continuing the WID tradition of caloric intermission excess!

The highlight of the evening was the performance by the legendary singer and songwriter Janis Ian, who enchanted the audience and performed such favorites as “At Seventeen,” “Jesse” and “Society’s Child.” With a repertoire spanning more than 40 years of songwriting, her music was interspersed with amusing and touching tales chronicling her life and career.

For eleven years, Ever Widening Circle has battled negative stereotypes of people with disabilities and served as a model for presenting entertainment accessible for all audiences. Recent performances have included Grammy Award-winning Blind Boys of Alabama, comedian Josh Blue, and the internationally renowned AXIS Dance Company, comprised of dancers with and without disabilities. (The links below will take you to highlights and videos of past performances).
