URBAN INDIAN CENTERS: Important resources for American Indians and Alaska Natives with disabilities at

Census 2000 found more American Indians and Alaska Natives (66%) live in urban areas than in rural areas or on tribal lands.¹ It also found that American Indians and Alaska Natives as a group have one of the highest disability rates (24.3%) in the country.² Often, American Indians and Alaska Natives with disabilities live in communities served by urban Indian centers. These centers were established for American Indians and Alaska Natives who left their reservations or homelands to live in the cities and seek new opportunities. Each urban Indian center varies in programs offered; however, American Indians and Alaska Natives with disabilities are encouraged to contact their local urban Indian center for possible referrals to vocational rehabilitation and employment services. This practice guideline lists urban Indian centers across the United States.
