Regional Sites for the Women with Disabilities Entrepreneur Project
In 2002, the Department of Labor Women's Bureau (WB) launched the Women with Disabilities Entrepreneurship Project (for more information, read the Nov. EQUITY Feature Article). For Phase II of the project, the following centers serve four regions across the U.S. Each organization has a slightly different approach to serving women with disabilities interested in starting their own business. All four cities- Denver, CO, Atlanta, GA, Kansas City, MO, and Oakland, CA- are still actively recruiting. Interested women in these regions are encouraged to contact the programs and find out if they meet the requirements.
Catalyst Resources, Inc.
Catalyst Resources, Inc is a consulting firm based in Denver, CO. Under a project funded by the U.S. Department of Labor they are working with Small Business Development Centers and MicroBusiness Development Corp, Bold Consulting, U.S. Small Business Administration, Easter Seals-Agribility, Colorado Assistive Technology and the Asian Pacific Development Council. Catalyst is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the Women with Disabilities Entrepreneur Project. Catalyst offers:
- Technical assistance
- Mentoring
- Community development
- Conducts diversity studies for not-for-profit organizations
Catalyst's model for the Women with Disabilities Entrepreneur Project
is a unique approach. In conjunction with the MicroBusiness Development
Corp, they have formed a micro-lending loan lost reserve fund. The
fund, primarily supported by a grant from the Colorado Alliance of
Microenterprise Initiatives, the State of Colorado and other
foundational grants, provides a safety net in event that the women are
forced to default on their loan. In case of default, the loan lost
reserve fund covers their payments until they have the ability to
re-pay their loans. The loan payments made by the women help contribute
to the fund, creating a financial support system within the program.
In addition to the loan fund, the Denver program also provides training
courses, progress tracking, and assistance in the construction or
review of business plans. They also help participants obtain funding,
including securing the initial seed funds through general operating
loans.
