National Partners Launch Real Economic Impact Tour

Americans with disabilities will soon have greater access to free tax preparation, financial literacy and asset building services due to a successful pilot program. The program, Real Economic Impact Tour, is a public-private collaboration study designed to improve the long-term economic wellbeing of Americans with disabilities. The Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication (SPEC) department of IRS, the National Disability Institute and SPEC’s national partners who aid those with disabilities, unveiled the program October 24, during a media event held at the Washington DC Press Club.

"This wonderful event reflects the hard work of all our partners to reach and positively impact the financial lives of persons with disabilities" stated IRS Commissioner Mark Everson. He joined NDI’s Director Michael Morris, representatives from NCB Capital Impact and five other national disability groups in lauding the pilot’s successful completion. The project started small --12 cities in 2005 -- but expanded to 30 cities in 2006 and the 2007 filing season will bring 54 cities into the effort. "Our goal in SPEC is to integrate disability initiatives into every active community coalition over the next several years," stated Everson. The 2006 campaign engaged national groups such as Goodwill International, National Easter Seals Society, The Arc of the United States, National Council on Independent Living and World Institute on Disability.

Commissioner Everson spoke of the pride in the work that NDI and the partnerships have done and continues to do for people with disabilities. "We share a consistent message," said Everson. "The IRS is proud to be a partner with the National Disability Institute, NCB Capital Impact and other national organizations in this effort to ensure that low-income persons with disabilities are aware of the tax benefits to which they are entitled and have access to community-based free tax preparation programs. We applaud the effort of our partners to link these IRS supported free tax preparation programs to financial literacy and other asset building efforts."
