Training and Public Education

Up one level

Corporations, government agencies and organizations frequently hire WID's Training and Public Education Program to conduct trainings on disability awareness and etiquette, accommodating employees with disabilities, and increasing workplace diversity. WID's Training and Public Education Program also advises on access, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other civil rights laws. In addition to developing custom training packages to serve your business or organization’s specific needs, WID offers a variety of training packages to assist in the following topic areas:

Making Diversity Work for You: Hiring and Retaining People with Disabilities
The key to a successful business is finding and keeping good talent. People with disabilities are an untapped talent pool, and are often an excellent resource for creativity and problem solving skills. According to the Employers’ Forum on Disability, employees with disabilities are as productive and reliable as any other employees, and generally tend to have better attendance records, stay with employers longer and have fewer accidents at work.
Access to Medical Care: Adults with Physical Disabilities
A 22 minute video/DVD about mobility, vision, hearing and communication impairment in outpatient settings, for medical and service professionals and people with disabilities.
Working Without Losing Healthcare or Other Needed Benefits: Training and Technical Assistance for Organizations
Finding ways to combine public and employer-sponsored health care is still a specialty of only a handful of benefits planners nationwide. Modest investments of time in training staff can yield valuable results in new employment outcomes for people with disabilities. WID’s California Work Incentives Initiative (CWII) provides information to help navigate those points where health coverage rules and benefits laws are most problematic and complex: when a consumer considers new employment or a job change, or when several programs interact with one another to support employment.
Making Asset Building Programs Accessible for People with Disabilities
People with visible and non-visible disabilities, including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients, already permeate asset development programs. WID offers training and technical assistance to economic development and other asset development professionals. Our services help improve disability services in programs promoting self-sufficiency and enable program clients to succeed.
How to Make Technology Accessible to People with Disabilities: Best Practices
By 2020, the aging Baby Boomers will add another estimated 50 million people with disabilities to the U.S. population, drastically increasing the demand for accessible technology. WID can help companies meet this demand by providing training on best practices for including people with disabilities in the design, testing and marketing of common technology products (such as cell phones, computers and other communication and work devices) and by providing technical assistance for making mainstream electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities.
